Two Trees, Two Systems - Exploring the Deeper Meaning of Eden

In the Garden of Eden, God placed two trees with deep symbolic meaning:
• The Tree of Life
• The Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil
These trees were not magical objects. They represented two kingdoms, two mindsets, two ways of life, and ultimately two characters.
The Tree of Life represented the kingdom of God.
The Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil represented the kingdom of Satan.
Everything that has happened to humanity since that moment can be traced back to which system we choose.
Many Christians unintentionally blend the two trees:
• God is love, but will torture His enemies.
• God is forgiving, but will kill if rejected.
• God gives free will, but will punish if you choose wrong.
• God is good, but uses fear to motivate obedience.
This is exactly the mixture Satan wants people to believe.
But God never mixes love and fear, mercy and threat, forgiveness and destruction.
1 John 4:18
“There is no fear in love… perfect love casts out fear.”
God’s character is pure Agape, not mixed “good and evil.”
⸻
The Tree of Life – God’s system
The Tree of Life represents:
• Agape love
• Trust
• Freedom
• Life that flows from God
• Dependence on Him as the source of wisdom
• Relationship, not rules
It is a life lived in harmony with God’s character, His design, and His government of love.
John 17:3
“This is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.”
Eternal life is not a reward. It is the result of being connected to the only Source of life.
The Tree of Life offered:
• healing
• joy
• security
• peace
• clarity of mind
• eternal growth
Everything God is, everything Jesus showed, was symbolised by this tree.
⸻
The Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil – Satan’s system
Most people think this tree represents morality, but the Bible shows something deeper.
It represents the mixture of good and evil that Satan’s kingdom runs on.
Satan’s version of “good”
• performance based
• reward for obedience
• conditions for acceptance
• blessing through behaviour
Satan’s version of evil
• punishment
• fear
• guilt
• intimidation
• destruction for disobedience
Put them together and you get:
• good if you comply
• evil if you don’t
This is the foundation of Satan’s government.
It looks like this in real life:
• do good and you’ll be accepted
• do wrong and you deserve punishment
This is why Satan’s system is so deceptive. It mixes love with fear, mercy with threat, blessing with punishment. It is a system of control, reward and retaliation.
⸻
Why eating from the wrong tree was so dangerous
The danger was not the fruit.
The real danger was the mindset that the fruit represented.
God said, “In the day you eat of it you shall surely die.”
Not because He would kill Adam and Eve, but because the belief they would adopt destroys the mind.
Once Adam and Eve accepted Satan’s thinking:
• they saw God differently
• fear replaced trust
• shame replaced confidence
• self-preservation replaced love
• hiding replaced relationship
Genesis 3:10
“I was afraid… and I hid myself.”
The moment they believed God would punish them, they could no longer feel safe with Him.
Sin did not change God. Sin changed how humans viewed God.
⸻
Two trees still exist today
Humanity continually chooses which system to live under.
The Tree of Life says:
• God is love
• God never forces
• Life flows from relationship with Him
• Obedience comes from trust
The Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil says:
• God loves but will destroy His enemies
• God blesses obedience but punishes sinners
• Salvation is based on performance
• Fear is necessary to control behaviour
One tree produces love.
The other tree produces religion, fear and confusion.
⸻
Jesus and the Two Trees
Jesus came to show us the Father and reveal the Tree of Life again.
He said:
• “He who has seen Me has seen the Father.”
• “I do not condemn you.”
• “Love your enemies.”
• “Forgive them.”
• “I lay down My life.”
Jesus showed what God is like.
He showed us the Tree of Life.
Satan showed what his system looks like when he worked through men to crucify Jesus:
• accusation
• condemnation
• violence
• fear
• control
• death
The cross exposed both trees, both characters, both governments.
⸻
Eden was not a test of obedience.
It was a choice between two systems.
• Life through trust in God
or
• Death through belief in Satan’s lie about God
Satan accused God of being harsh, restrictive and punitive.
Adam and Eve believed the lie, and the fear that followed has affected the whole world ever since.
The work of the gospel is to bring us back to the Tree of Life, back to confidence in the Father’s love.
Revelation 22:14 tells us that in the restored world:
“Blessed are those who… have the right to the tree of life.”
God is leading humanity back to the life, peace and joy that flow only from His character of love.
Two trees, two systems, two ways of seeing God.
The Tree of Life is still calling.
