Understanding the Father, the Son and the Spirit Without Losing the Simplicity of Scripture

ree

Most Christians grow up hearing that God is three co-equal persons who together make up one God. The word Trinity becomes so familiar that few ever question whether it is actually written in Scripture. But when we set creeds aside and look at the Bible alone, something different emerges.

The word Trinity does not appear in the Bible.

And the Bible never describes God as three divine beings who form one God.

Instead, Scripture consistently shows:

There is one God, the Father

He has a real begotten Son, Jesus Christ

Their shared Spirit is the presence and life of both the Father and the Son

This is not about attacking anyone. It is about trusting the Bible to speak for itself.

One God — The Father

The Bible identifies the Father, not a triune being, as the only true God.

“For us there is one God, the Father, from whom are all things.” 1 Corinthians 8:6

“This is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.” John 17:3

“One God and Father of all who is above all.” Ephesians 4:6

Scripture never calls anyone “God the Son” or “God the Holy Spirit.”

It says “the Son of God” and “the Spirit of God.”

Jesus — The Real Begotten Son

Jesus is worshipped, divine and eternal because He came forth from the Father and inherits everything from Him.

“The Father loves the Son and has given all things into His hand.” John 3:35

“He is the image of the invisible God.” Colossians 1:15

“In Him dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily.” Colossians 2:9

He is not the Father, but He is one with the Father through perfect love and trust.

The Spirit — The Presence of the Father and the Son

The Bible never presents the Spirit as an independent divine person. Instead, the Spirit is the personal presence of God and of Christ.

“It is not you who speak, but the Spirit of your Father who speaks in you.” Matthew 10:20

“God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into your hearts.” Galatians 4:6

“The Lord is the Spirit.” 2 Corinthians 3:17

The Spirit is how the Father and the Son come close to us.

Jesus Is the Comforter

Jesus spoke of the Comforter, but He did not reveal a separate heavenly being.

“I will not leave you orphans, I will come to you.” John 14:18

“At that day you will know that I am in My Father, and you in Me, and I in you.” John 14:20

Paul repeats this truth plainly:

“Christ in you, the hope of glory.” Colossians 1:27

The Comforter is Christ coming to believers through the Spirit.

Revelation Shows Two Thrones, Not Three

If there were three co-equal gods, Scripture would show three thrones. Revelation never does.

“A throne was set in heaven, and One sat on the throne.” Revelation 4:2

Then the Lamb approaches the One on the throne.

“The Lamb came and took the scroll out of the right hand of Him who sat on the throne.” Revelation 5:6-7

Jesus later says:

“I also overcame and sat down with My Father on His throne.” Revelation 3:21

Two thrones.

The Father and the Son.

Never a third for the Spirit.

Worship is given to them:

“Blessing and honor and glory and power be to Him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb forever and ever.” Revelation 5:13

The Spirit Is Never Prayed To, Worshipped or Addressed in Scripture

If the Spirit were a third divine being, we would expect to find:

Prayers addressed to the Spirit

Worship directed to the Spirit

Praise lifted to the Spirit

Conversations between the Spirit and the Father or the Son

None of these exist in Scripture.

Prayer is always:

• To the Father

• In the name of Jesus

• By the Spirit

Jesus taught:

“When you pray, say: Our Father in heaven.” Luke 11:2

And again:

“Whatever you ask the Father in My name, He will give you.” John 16:23

No biblical prayer, no biblical worship, and no biblical conversation is ever directed to the Spirit.

Do We Believe in the Holy Spirit? Yes — More Than Ever

Some may say that if we do not see the Holy Spirit as a third being, then we are denying the Spirit. The truth is the opposite.

We believe in the Spirit deeply

We long for the Spirit more than ever

Because the Spirit is the life of Jesus dwelling inside us

“Christ in you, the hope of glory.” Colossians 1:27

“The Spirit of His Son in your hearts, crying out ‘Abba, Father.’” Galatians 4:6

We do not want a distant third being who cannot relate to human pain.

We long for the Spirit because it is Jesus Himself living in us.

A Saviour who knows temptation

A Brother who knows suffering

A Son who knows the heart of the Father

That is the Comforter we want.

Not a stranger, but the One who loved us and gave Himself for us — living in us, transforming us, and giving us victory.

Why This Matters

This simple biblical picture reveals the greatest love story in the universe.

A Father who gave His real Son

A Son who freely offered Himself

A Spirit that brings their love directly into our hearts

“God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself.” 2 Corinthians 5:19

Heaven is not built on mystery and confusion.

It is built on family, relationship and love.
